I found a set of these nano blocks originally at the Boeing Museum of Flight in Seattle a couple years ago. They’re a Japanese version of Lego that feel like old Lego sets without many pre-formed pieces.
This set showed up in the mail fairly damages but it’ll build fine still. These are fairly difficult due to the tiny pieces but it’s a nice shift from Lego small sets where they can take some time to do.
Update: Knolling is complete!
The doggo is not impressed
Final Update : And she’s done!

I bought a couple of those from an art museum gift shop before the whole coronavirus thing... Normally, I’m strictly brand-loyal to Lego, but the nanoblock’s tiny size was a novelty I found very intriguing. They ended up being lots of fun to put together, and I discovered something weird about them. When the packaging tells you that they don’t share dimensions with Lego, that’s a lie. a 2x4 nanoblock brick is the same width, height, and length as a Lego 1x2 plate! Of course, the studs don’t connect, but they still share some dimensions.

They are a lot of fun, and cheap as hell too. 3I bought on eBay for $25

And Diet Mountain Dew. That’s how my wife manages her day, too.

I’ve started to drink coffee with this isolation as I've had trouble sourcing my preferred Diet Mountain Dew

My wife sucks it down. She hates coffee, and so MD was how she got through med school and residency. These days I source it from our local grocery when there’s a sale and stock up. Problem is, there is some other little bastard who grabs what he can off the shelves for himself, too, sometimes before I can get there. Fortunately, I know the stock guys and can get them to go in the back and dig more off the pallets.

Oh, that’s a cool set!!! Had never even heard of Nanoblocks until now!

They're fun and more of a challenge coming from most modern Lego sets.

I think they’re both challenging in different ways... It seems to me that the nanoblocks are challenging by virtue of their small size, plus the fact that you can slide the pieces around underneath the bricks, so they’re more finicky. Whereas Lego sets are much more complex from a technical perspective, with all sorts of fancy building techniques possible. I like both a lot.

Without a doubt! I’ve been building Lego for nearly 30 years and while they’re wonderful I don’t find much challenge in the anymore. T hey’re more meditative for me.
These are new and actually hard to put together both because of their size and the construction. They’re also way less stable when assembled than Lego!

Mid build popcorn break!
My wife did most of the Knolling and has been handing me the pieces. It's been fun and the popcorn break was her idea.

That’s why it’s fun to start building custom creations... That’s where the challenge reemerges. It’s like solving a puzzle and sculpting at the same time!

“Kno lling” is a term I am unfamiliar with.

I only learned the official term recently as well. It’s the method of organizing everything, a lot of folks use it with Lego. I don’t usually but it drives my wife nuts when I build out of large piles of pieces so I started it and the Mrs liked it enough she joined in.

Some people are born sorters. I’m not. When I do a Lego, I empty the bags in number order into bowls or Tupperwares. Then I just dig for the pieces. I do, however, take the time to pull out all the pieces for a given step before I attach them. That keeps me from accidentally skipping a piece.

Cool! I have a Nano Block set of the Space Shuttle, that’s been waiting for me to put together for years. I should go ahead and put it together one of these days.

That was the first one I got. Actually bought another here to do this week, bought 3 of them for $30 on ebay. This one, a Lunar Lander and another Shuttle.
They also make a very large space shuttle that has over 2200 pieces and took me most of a weekend to build. My least favorite thing about these is that they don’t display well though as they’re pretty fragile.

I do neither of those things, just brick by brick dig through my piles dumped out of bags.
I did this to appease the wife a bit and try something new and I could take it or leave it but my Wife really enjoyed it and she was involved the whole build this way so I’ll do it again when she’s around.
